Bienvenidos!!

Welcome to our blog as we share about our special journey, sponsored by the wonderful folks at Fulbright. We will be visiting Mexico from June 9th to July 7th, 2012. Our group includes 7 practicing teachers, 7 undergraduates (soon-to-be teachers), and two teacher education faculty. Along with my brave bilingual scholar, Maria Zamudio, we will lead the group as we spend 4 weeks in south-central Mexico. We will be learning about the Mexican educational system along with important social, political, and historical issues in Mexico.

The majority of our time will be spent in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. All of the participants will be living with host families and taking Spanish language classes at CETLALIC, a spectacular language school in Cuernavaca. We will also be taking trips to the following cities: Taxco, Tepoztlan, Puebla, and Mexico City.

Visit our blog to stay up-to-date on our adventures and lessons learned! Enjoy!

Martedi, 12 Luglio, 2012

Today we were given the opportunity to visit Colegio Hamlet, which is a private elementary school in Cuernavaca. Rebecca and I were able to observe a fifth grade Spanish class where the students were given the opportunity to practice their English by asking us questions. Although they were hesitant at first, after a few minutes we got the famous question “What is your favorite…” that is when they sadly found out we were not the biggest fans of Justin Bieber. It was a pleasure to interact with the students since they seemed just as excited as we were. After Spanish class was over, the teachers rotated classrooms and Italian class was next. There we learned how to write the date in Italian as you can see at the top of this post (that is probably all I will ever learn in Italian). The students sang two songs in Italian along with the teacher which was very impressive. After, we met with the director of the school who was nice enough to answer some of our questions. We learned that the enrollment fee of a private school depends on various things such as, the popularity or prestige of the school, the size of the school, and classes and sports that the school offers. Colegio Hamlet charges 1600 pesos a month and they are very proud to be the winners of speech/debate in the state of Morelos for two years in a row. They are also very proud that most of their students, when they continue to la prepa or high school they are placed in advanced levels of English. Their school schedule consists of 2 ½ hrs of English, 2 ½ hrs of Spanish, and ½ hr of recess a day, they also have 1 hr of sports, 1 hr of computer lab, and 1 hr of Italian a week (Italian is offered for 3rd and 6th graders). The main problem that we talked about in their school is the parent teacher relationship. Since it is common for both parents to work it is difficult for them to attend conferences, especially when they are not granted permission to leave work for such things. Just like any student, they are affected by the lack of parent interaction. On a positive note, Colegio Hamlet hopes to offer secundaria or middle school starting the next academic year.
